SBI Card Reward Points Redemption Cap: What Changes from April 2026
Since 1 April 2026, SBI Card has capped how many reward points you can convert to statement credit each month — and the minimum redemption unit has changed too.

From 1 April 2026, SBI Card limits statement-credit redemptions to 60,000 reward points per card per calendar month, and requires redemptions in multiples of 4,000 points. The cap applies to almost all SBI credit cards. Three cards — the Air India SBI Signature Card, the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, and the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK — are exempt. Points above the cap are not lost; they carry over to the next month.

Picture this (illustrative): Priya holds two SBI credit cards. She has been stockpiling reward points for a year and decides to redeem a large chunk as statement credit in one shot. She logs in expecting to zero out her balance — and finds she can only redeem 60,000 points this month. The rest will have to wait. She also discovers her 10,500-point balance on a second card can only be redeemed as 8,000 points right now, because 10,500 is not a clean multiple of 4,000. The remaining 2,500 points sit idle until next month.
This is not a glitch. It is SBI Card's revised redemption policy, effective since 1 April 2026, confirmed on the SBI Card official customer notices page.
What exactly changed from 1 April 2026?
SBI Card introduced two simultaneous changes to statement-credit redemptions: a monthly cap of 60,000 points per card, and a requirement that every redemption be in a multiple of 4,000 points.
Before this revision, most SBI cardholders could redeem reward points as statement credit in whatever quantity they chose, up to their available balance. The April 2026 update, announced via SBI Card's customer notices page, changed two things at once:
- Monthly cap: A maximum of 60,000 reward points can be redeemed as statement credit per card per calendar month.
- Redemption multiple: Points must be redeemed in exact multiples of 4,000. Partial lots below the next multiple of 4,000 cannot be submitted.
SBI Card also updated the forfeiture timelines for reward points earned under promotional offers, with changes taking effect from January 2026. If you received bonus points under any limited-time promotion, check their expiry date on the SBI Card rewards portal.
Who actually hits the 60,000-point ceiling?
The cap bites hardest on high-spenders who have been accumulating points over several months before redeeming in one go.
At SBI Card's standard base earn rate of 1 reward point per ₹100 spent, you would need to spend ₹60,00,000 in a single month to earn 60,000 base points. That is not a realistic concern for most cardholders.
The cap becomes relevant in two real-world situations:
- Point hoarders: Cardholders who accumulate points for months and then attempt a large single redemption. If you have, say, 1,80,000 points saved up, you now need three separate months to redeem them all as statement credit.
- Accelerated earn cards: Cards that offer 10X or 5X earn rates on specific categories can pile up points faster. On a card with a 10X category, ₹6,00,000 of qualifying spend would generate 60,000 accelerated points — a figure some premium cardholders can reach.
For the vast majority of SBI cardholders with modest monthly balances, the 60,000-point cap will never be a practical constraint. The 4,000-point multiple is the change more people will actually notice.
Why the 4,000-point multiple is more annoying than it sounds
The multiple requirement means any point balance that is not a clean multiple of 4,000 will always leave a small residue you cannot immediately use.
Consider a balance of 13,700 points. The largest multiple of 4,000 below 13,700 is 12,000. You can redeem 12,000 points. The remaining 1,700 points sit in your account until you accumulate enough to reach the next 4,000-point threshold — in this case, until you earn at least 2,300 more points.
| Points balance | Redeemable this month | Stranded (carry over) |
|---|---|---|
| 4,500 | 4,000 | 500 |
| 9,500 | 8,000 | 1,500 |
| 13,700 | 12,000 | 1,700 |
| 60,000 | 60,000 | 0 |
| 65,000 | 60,000 (monthly cap) | 5,000 |
Stranded points are not forfeited — they carry forward. But if you were planning to clear your balance in one redemption, you may need to wait an extra billing cycle.
How this plays out on the SBI SimplyCLICK Credit Card
The SBI SimplyCLICK Credit Card by SBI Card is a popular entry-level online-spend card, and its earning structure means most holders will rarely approach the new cap — but the multiple rule still applies.
The SBI SimplyCLICK Credit Card earns 10X reward points on partner brands (BookMyShow, Apollo24X7, Domino's, IGP, Myntra, Yatra, Netmeds, and Cleartrip) and 5X on all other online spends, according to the card's published terms. Offline and non-partner spends earn 1 point per ₹100.
Note that the card already has its own separate monthly earning caps: 10,000 points per calendar month on 10X partner spends, and 10,000 points per calendar month on 5X other-online spends, as stated in the card's footnotes. These earning caps are distinct from the new redemption cap.
Worked example: a typical SimplyCLICK month
Assumptions: ₹5,000 on Myntra (10X), ₹3,000 on other online shopping (5X), ₹2,000 on offline spends (1X). All figures illustrative of a moderate online spender.
- Myntra spend: ₹5,000 × 10 points per ₹100 = 500 points
- Other online spend: ₹3,000 × 5 points per ₹100 = 150 points
- Offline spend: ₹2,000 × 1 point per ₹100 = 20 points
- Total points earned this month: 670 points
- Redeemable as statement credit: 0 points (670 is below the 4,000-point minimum multiple)
- Points carried forward: 670
A typical SimplyCLICK user spending around ₹10,000 online per month earns roughly 650–700 points. At that pace, it takes about 6 months of accumulation to cross the first 4,000-point redemption threshold. The 60,000-point monthly cap is not a concern at this spend level. The multiple rule, however, means you cannot redeem in small increments.
Which SBI cards are exempt from the cap?
Three cards are carved out: the Air India SBI Signature Card, the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, and the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK, per SBI Card's official notice.
SBI Card has not publicly explained why these three are exempt. The Air India SBI Signature Card is a co-brand card where points feed into Air India's Flying Returns programme, so the redemption mechanics differ. The two PhonePe co-brand cards are newer products with their own reward structures. If you hold any of these three, the 60,000-point monthly cap does not apply to your statement-credit redemptions — but verify the current terms on SBI Card's website, as co-brand card terms can change independently.
The 60,000-point cap and the 4,000-point multiple requirement apply only to statement-credit redemptions. SBI Card has not confirmed whether the same rules apply to other redemption channels — merchandise, vouchers, or travel bookings through the rewards portal. If you have a large point balance and want to avoid the monthly cap, redeeming for non-statement-credit options may be worth checking. Always verify current terms on the SBI Card website before you redeem, because redemption rules for specific channels can differ.
- Check your current point balance on the SBI Card app or website. If you have been hoarding points, calculate how many months it will take to redeem them all under the 60,000-point monthly cap.
- Plan redemptions in 4,000-point lots. Before you submit a redemption request, confirm your balance is a multiple of 4,000, or accept that the remainder carries over. There is no deadline pressure here — stranded points are not forfeited.
- Check promotional point expiry dates. SBI Card updated forfeiture timelines for promotional offer points from January 2026. Log in to the rewards portal and look for any bonus points with an upcoming expiry date. Redeem those first.
- If you hold the Air India SBI Signature Card, the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, or the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK, confirm with SBI Card's customer care (1860-180-1290) that the exemption still applies to your account, as co-brand terms can be updated independently.
- Reassess whether statement credit is your best redemption option. If other channels (vouchers, travel) offer better value and are not subject to the same cap, it may be worth comparing before you redeem. The SBI Card rewards portal lists current options.
Frequently asked questions
Which SBI credit cards are exempt from the 60,000-point monthly redemption cap?
According to SBI Card's official customer notices page, three cards are exempt: the Air India SBI Signature Card, the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE, and the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK. All other SBI credit cards eligible for statement-credit redemption are subject to the 60,000-point monthly cap.
What does the 4,000-point redemption multiple mean in practice?
From 1 April 2026, you can only redeem reward points for statement credit in exact multiples of 4,000. So if you have 9,500 points, you can redeem 8,000 and the remaining 1,500 points stay in your account. You cannot redeem an odd balance below the next multiple of 4,000.
Does the 60,000-point cap affect how I earn points on the SBI SimplyCLICK Credit Card?
No. The cap applies only to how many points you can redeem as statement credit each calendar month. Earning is unaffected: the SBI SimplyCLICK Credit Card by SBI Card still earns 10X points on partner brands and 5X on other online spends, subject to its own separate monthly earning caps.
What happens to reward points that cannot be redeemed because of the monthly cap?
Points above the 60,000-point monthly cap are not forfeited — they remain in your account and can be redeemed in a subsequent month. However, SBI Card has also updated forfeiture timelines for promotional offer reward points from January 2026, so check the expiry date on any bonus points credited under a promotional scheme.
Can I still redeem SBI Card reward points for things other than statement credit?
Yes. The 60,000-point monthly cap and the 4,000-point multiple requirement apply specifically to statement-credit redemptions. Other redemption options — such as merchandise, gift vouchers, or flight bookings through the SBI Card rewards portal — are governed by their own terms, which you should verify on the SBI Card website.
The simplest takeaway: if you hold an SBI credit card and redeem points as statement credit, redeem in multiples of 4,000 and plan for no more than 60,000 points per month — and check your promotional point expiry dates now, before those points disappear quietly.
